چکیده

The production of added value products such as biochars from food-industry by-products is a sustainable idea. These raw materials not only are free of charge but their pyrolysis will help solve management problems. The objectives of the present study are (a) to characterize the developed materials for their properties that affect sorption such as surface area, grain size, total organic carbon, etc., and (b) to evaluate the ability of these biochars to remove pollutants, and more specifically, phenanthrene and mercury, from aqueous solutions. All biochars presented better sorption capacity than the raw biomass (e.g. malt spent rootlets). The values of maximum sorption capacities (qmax) are rather satisfactory Based on the results, biochar is suggested as an effective solution for the decontamination of water from phenanthrene and mercury.

A Comparative Study of Two Indigenous Bacterial Biosorbents for Mercury Removal from Aqueous Solutions

In the present study, the capability of dried indigenous biomass of Vibrio and Oceanimonas, was assessed and compared for mercury biosorption from aqueous solutions. It was found that both of the biosorbents reached equilibrium after 60 min of contact although the mercury sorption capacity of Vibrio was significantly more. Its sorption capacity increased from 9 to 83 ...

New Nano-Adsorbents for the Removal of Chromium (III) and Mercury (II) from Aqueous Solutions

Polyvinyl alcohol/ glycerin- magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (PVAGLPs) have been synthesized successfully by hydrothermal method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR). The adsorbed activities of the polyvinyl alcohol/ glycerin- magnetic iron oxide nano particles (PVAGLPs) were ca...
